American Colloid improves mine production, operational logistics, and equipment maintenance

American Colloid Company is one of the world’s leading producers of bentonite clay. Bentonite’s unique chemical structure gives it a diverse range of capabilities, enabling it to act as a thickener, sealant, binder, lubricant or absorption agent. The company’s principle markets include metalcasting, pet products, oil and gas well drilling, industrial specialties and agriculture. With mining operations throughout North America and a sister subsidiary with mining operations throughout the world, American Colloid’s trademark Additrol line is an industry standard in the metalcasting industry.

On any given day American Colloid may have 7 to 12 active locations within 60 miles of each other. For operational efficiency, they must have asset visibility to track equipment cycle times, run times, idle time and movement. Additionally, American Colloid needed to track a fleet of heavy and light-duty service trucks that travel over highways and mines haul-road to do fueling, oil changes and repairs. During the winter months, portable generators are used to keep earth scrapers and dozer engines warm. Monitoring these generators for preventative maintenance and other parameters is just one more advantage American Colloid gained using Geoforce.

After researching and evaluating various GPS-based asset management solutions, Rodney Raber, American Colloid’s Mining Superintendent, chose Geoforce for its end to end solutions that include purpose-built, rugged GPS tracking devices, industry-focused software applications, and world-class customer support and service.

American Colloid employs Geoforce solutions to improve operational logistics, mine production and equipment maintenance by tracking geo-positions, engine runtime and location for their powered mining equipment and vehicles, both on and off mine sites.

Interstate improves vehicle health, reduces idling, and cuts maintenance costs by 10%

Interstate improves vehicle health, reduces idling, and cuts maintenance costs by 10%

Interstate Batteries, a leading supplier of batteries to thousands of garages, retail outlets, repair facilities, and vehicle dealerships across North America, has earned a reputation for reliable, timely service. Their company slogan of “Outrageously Dependable® service” shows their strong commitment to customers.

Challenge

Delivering the right product at the right time means Interstate Batteries needs to keep its vehicles in top shape. An unplanned truck breakdown or repair can impact both customer service and profitability. Obtaining regular information of the state of the vehicles was a challenge, said DJ Harrison, Interstate’s National Fleet Manager. “We’d have to rely on the driver or reach out to the local manager.” Unfortunately, as each local manager spent time collecting mileage data or inspecting trucks, they were taken away from their regular duties. Harrison says, “Instead of selling batteries, he was trying to take care of his trucks.”

Solution

Interstate chose to implement Geotab’s vehicle tracking solution through Geoforce. To date, Geoforce has provided installation, training and configuration services through its in-house network of field service technicians to nearly 40 Interstate distributors across the US and Canada. Geoforce’s ability to provide local “boots on the ground” throughout North America has simplified and sped up the installation process, which has proven critical to the roll out to Interstate’s entire distributor network. In addition, Geoforce continues to provide support and services to help distributors streamline operations. This support has included providing critical vehicle and driver behavior data to regional managers and centralized management in order for them to proactively manage their fleets.

Results

Interstate Batteries has removed about an hour of idling per day per truck which translates to fuel savings, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and fewer emissions. Multiply one less hour of idling per day by 600+ trucks and you have significant savings over time. Maintenance costs were cut approximately 10%. All of this has led to greater revenue and less cost, as well as minimized risk of accidents and potential legal consequences.

JP Services cuts idling times and maintenance costs

JP Services cuts idling times and maintenance costs

For JP Services, an oilfield pipeline service company based in Texas, delivering service excellence to customers is a top priority. However, keeping projects on schedule and on budget means staying up-to-date on the status of drivers and vehicles – which is not an easy feat when job sites are off the main highways or even out of state.

Challenge

Before telematics, JP Services had several challenges to address, including finding a way to verify the time of arrival at a job site and time of leaving, encouraging safe driving habits in the field, reducing speeding, and getting information on repairs before they turned into bigger issues. Brittany Peter, Fleet and Asset Manager, explains, “We wanted to manage our entire fleet as a whole better, cut back on repairs, and provide our customers with even better service.”

Solution

JP Services implemented a Geotab solution through Geoforce that provides a robust web-based fleet management platform that allows them to see all vehicle and driver information in one place. One of the reports JP Services consults most frequently is the Advanced Detail Exception report, which summarizes which fleet rules have been broken, such as speeding. When rules are broken, notifications can be sent in real-time to alert the driver so behavior is corrected right way. JP Services also relies on the Risk Management report to see how many rules were broken and the total miles driven for a particular time frame. This report is useful for comparing driver performance. Reporting and analyzing the information has become an important part of day-to-day activities. Peter says, “Most of my reports are daily, so I can see what’s going on and then go from there.”

Results

JP Services has cut down on idling and maintenance costs. Tracking idle time and idle to cost percentage has helped raise awareness of excessive idling. Drivers are more conscious of their behavior and look for ways to be more fuel efficient. Previously, they had problems with exhaust filters clogging up, since most of the trucks are diesels. Now that idling is under control, the filter issues have been eliminated. And less time spent for cleaning and repair means more time on the job site. Engine fault code data allows JP Services to detect possible issues in advance. When diagnostic faults are detected, Peter alerts the mechanic right away so they can be attended to quickly. This proactive management helps cut down on potentially costly repairs or vehicle down-time. Peter says, “We can solve the minor issue at the time, before it becomes a major problem.” Telematics has become an extension of their safety program, supporting company policies and training when drivers are in the field. Speeding is controlled with in-vehicle driver feedback via beeper. As a result, JP Services has seen a reduction in maximum speeds.

Solaris saves $70,000 per year on fuel and maintenance

Solaris saves $70,000 per year on fuel and maintenance

With operations in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania, Houston-based Solaris provides innovative and cost-effective oilfield products, services, and infrastructure to enhance drilling, completions, efficiency, and safety in North American shale plays.

Challenge

Having access to real-time, accurate information is essential to fleet efficiency, safety, and productivity. “One of the top challenges for us was to gather information we were getting and build that into usable and quantifiable information that could help us make better business decisions,” said Logistics Coordinator Dan Haseman. “It’s always great to have a bunch of data, but if you don’t know what to do with it or how to use it, then it’s really irrelevant.”

Solution

Solaris had been using Geoforce to track specialized trailers, sand silos, and generators for several years. Working with Geoforce, they later implemented a Geotab solution for advanced vehicle tracking. Geotab and Geoforce worked with Solaris to develop customized reporting for idling that is automatically generated. Prior to the customization, Haseman had to create the report from scratch each month. These customized reports show which vehicles idled and for how long and when. With this information, Solaris is able to reduce needless idling in the fleet’s trucks.

Results

Based on an initial 40 vehicles Solaris was using at the start of the implementation, initial savings per year were about $70,000 for fuel and maintenance. Due to the nature of the work, some operational idling is expected. But with this solution in place, the team has set a goal of 30% idling down from the initial baseline of 60%. The benefits haven’t been just to the bottom line. Solaris uses the insights on driving behavior to enhance their corporate safety program. “It can monitor seat belt usage, real harsh braking, and vehicle crash recreation. If there is an issue, we can research and find out what happened,” says Haseman. If a driver exhibits poor driving habits, Solaris will address the issue and work to find a corrective action. Tackling speeding also assists with maintenance and fuel costs. Overall, the solution has saved time and taken guesswork out of monitoring fleet operations. Fleet data has been turned into a valuable tool that Solaris can use to optimize the efficiency and safety of their innovative fleet.
